In a tragic incident, gunmen in Somalia attacked beachgoers at a popular beach in Mogadishu, killing and wounding dozens of them.

According to Agence France-Presse, Somali police spokesman Abdifatah Aden Hassan said: “More than 32 civilians were killed in this attack, and about 63 were injured, some of them seriously.”

“Somali security forces have eliminated the attackers,” Somali National Television said in a statement.

Former Somali Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire said, “An explosion occurred on a popular beach in the Somali capital late Friday evening.”

Khairi said on his X account, “The explosion occurred while Lido beachgoers were swimming, resulting in deaths and injuries. He did not provide further details about the dead and injured or who was responsible for the explosion.”

“I send my deepest condolences to the families, relatives and friends of those killed in these explosions,” he added, saying: “The fact that the terrorist attack coincided with this night when the beach is most crowded shows the hostility of the terrorists towards the Somali people.”

Al-Shabaab, which is linked to Al-Qaeda, has previously claimed responsibility for similar attacks.
