The 2022 M-346 “Bielik” plane crashed during a training flight at the Gdynia military airport. The plane hit the tarmac and the pilot ejected. The accident happened around 1 p.m. In total, he had flown nearly two thousand hours, of which 1,100 hours were spent on Bielik aircraft alone. He was the second most experienced pilot in Poland in terms of experience working with this model.
The Supreme Audit Office was already worried about the terrible condition of the M-346 “Bielik” plane a year ago.
The cause of the crash is being investigated on the spot by the State Aircraft Accident Investigation Commission, the Military Prosecutor’s Office and the Military Police. It is not yet known whether the tragedy was caused by pilot error or an aircraft malfunction. There have been problems with these aircraft models before.
In 2019-2021, the Supreme Control conducted an inspection at the 41st training aviation base in Deblin. After the inspection, it was concluded that the condition of the M-346 aircraft is very bad. However, Robert Jeła still flew on such a plane on Friday.
In 2020, the average efficiency of M-346 aircraft was 47.3%. From the beginning of 2021 to the end of the inspection activity, this percentage increased to 56.4 percent. Meanwhile, according to the contract with the M-346 aircraft manufacturer, this ratio should be at least 75%.
“The main obstacles to the full use of M-346 aircraft for training are the low efficiency of the aircraft, which is caused by the delay in the delivery of spare parts and consumables, and the long period of warranty repairs carried out by the manufacturer.
The poor condition of the planes approved for flights in 2023 was also reported. In December, the General Command of the Armed Forces reported that an “uncontrolled fairing separation from the aircraft” occurred during a training flight of an M-346 Bielik. Due to this incident, flights on the M-346 aircraft were temporarily suspended. The pilot then landed safely at Dublin Airport.
