The assailant left the scene on foot before allegedly jumping on a city bike. He was last seen in Central Park shortly after the murder.
He is said to be carrying what the police describe as a distinctive gray backpack.
The police previously stated on Wednesday that the attack appeared to be targeted.
According to the New York Times, it seemed that the assailant knew exactly which door Thompson woudl use.
Thompson arrived early at the new York Hilton Midtown, where the company hosted an investor day on Wednesday.
“He was a good person and I am so sad,” Thompson’s sister,Elena Reveiz,told the New York Times.
According to multiple media outlets, UnitedHealth Group CEO Andrew Witty addressed the incident during his presentation at the event.
“I am afraid,as some of you may know,that we are dealing with a very serious medical situation involving one of our team members,” Witty said to the attendees before apologizing that the event had to end early.
Witty did not share the news with attendees until just after 9 AM local time. Before that, the event was running normally.
