One of the key subgenres of horror cinema, perhaps due to the added fear caused by a context far from the supernatural, is what is known as “home invasion”, which is characterized by a home invasion with extreme violence. Recent classics like Funny Gamesof Michael Hanekewhich participated in the official section at Cannes in 1997 and had a sequel, shot by the same director ten years later; Panic Room (David Koepp, 2002), Inside (Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury, 2007) or You are the next one (Adam Wingard, 2011) fall into this category, along with Spanish proposals such as As you sleep (2011), from Jaume Balagueróo Kidnapped (2010), by Miguel Ángel Vivas.
The strangers
Also in this list we must include The strangers (The Strangers2008), written and directed by Bryan Bertino and starring Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman, Gemma Ward, Laura Margolis and Keep Weeks. It is the story of a young couple who suffer brutal harassment from three masked men who break into the remote summer house where they are spending a few days, upon returning at dawn after a wedding. This film was the introduction of three new psychokillers in the annals of horror cinema: Dollface, the Man in the Mask and Pin-up Girl.
The trio would return in 2018 with The Strangers: Night Hunta new story of violence this time directed by Johannes Robertsafter making At 47 meters and before that Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021), from a script by Bertino and Ben Ketai supposedly based on real events. This time the victims are four members of a family spending the night in an isolated caravan camp.
For 2024, the “Strangers” return to the cinema through a three-episode reboot directed by Renny HarlinFinnish filmmaker working in Hollywood, author of hits such as Maximum risk (1993), The jungle 2 (1990) and horror films like Nightmare on Elm Street 4 (1988) o The Exorcist: The Beginning (2004).
Chapter 1
Within the framework of the New York Comic Con, Lionsgate revealed an intense first advance of The Strangers: Chapter 1. The story this time features a couple driving across the country towards a new beginning, but unfortunately, they are forced to stop at an Airbnb in Oregon, where they will be assaulted by three masked strangers. As in the two previous films, one of the stalkers asks about Tamara, whose identity – as a macguffin – is one of the great mysteries of the franchise.
The protagonists of this first episode will be Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, Rachel Shenton, Ema Horvath, Gabe Basso y Richard Brake. The script is written by Alan R. Cohen, Alan Freedland and Amber Loutfi.
In the words of the producer Courtney Solomon: «“When we set out to remake ‘The Strangers,’ we felt there was a bigger story to tell that could be as powerful and chilling and gruesome as the original and could really expand that world.”; «Shooting it as a trilogy allows us to create a hyper-realistic and terrifying character study”.
On the other hand, this year in Sitges Festival which ends today, Sunday, could be seen in the Panorama section The sacrifice gamefrom the director Jenn Wexlera spooky home invasion, with stylish staging and impressive traditional special effects, set during Christmas 1971.
