Trajano Andrade Viteri, former Minister of Public Works of the correista regime, the former judge of the CNJ, Mariana Yumbay, and the member of the extinct Communication Regulation Council, Paulina Mogrovejo, also aspire to occupy a seat in the Assembly

Dismissed assembly members, recycled from the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (Cpccs), a former judge of the National Court of Justice (CNJ), former ministers, and journalists, are on the list of 1,200 applicants to occupy one of the 137 seats in Parliament which will be reinstated in October after the August 20, 2023 elections.

Among the applicants are at least 61 of the 137 former legislators dismissed due to the decree of May 17 that dissolved the Assembly, including Pierina Correa, sister of the former president of the Republic, Rafael Correa, currently a fugitive in Belgium.

Also on the list is Juan Javier Dávalos, one of the former members of the Participation Council removed from his duties by the Constitutional Court (CC), and former Correísmo ministers José Serrano and Ledy Zúñiga. But they are not the only ones who aspire to resume political activity with a seat in Parliament.

The names of other former officials close to the Correa regime appear on the list of candidates for national and provincial assembly. For example, there is the candidacy of former constituent assemblyman Trajano Andrade Viteri, who was also former Minister of Public Works.

Paulina Mogrovejo Rengel, member of the extinct Communication Regulation Council (Cordicom); an organism that was created in the correista administration, also appears in the contention. There is also the former judge of the National Court of Justice (CNJ), Mariana Yumbay Yallico.

In January 2015, Mariana Yumbay had to disassociate herself from the National Court, along with other magistrates, for having obtained the lowest score in the performance analysis carried out by the Council of the Judiciary.

The former deputy for the Patriotic Society Party (PSP), Renán Borbúa Espinel, is another who reappears on the political scene. The same is the case with Brith Vaca, former mayor of Quito, she appears on the list of candidates for the Assembly.

Some journalists also seek to dabble in politics. Santiago Zeas, former adviser to the former mayor of Quito, Mauricio Rodas, is competing for a seat in the Assembly for the Southern Constituency, but this time in alliance with the Actuemos movement, which is sponsoring Otto Sonnenholzner’s candidacy for the presidency of the Republic.

The journalist Jonnatan Carrera, likewise, enters the electoral battle at the hands of Lucio Gutiérrez of the Patriotic Society Party (PSP), which supports the candidacy of the Jan Tópic-Diana Jácome binomial. (SC)
