Trang – Dr. Trang, a vocal advocate for fairness in healthcare, is demanding a thorough examination in the tragic case of “Nong Me Tang”. The 3-year-old girl passed away after receiving treatment at Wang Wiset Hospital. Dr. Trang has ordered an investigation committee to determine if the death was due to alveoli and lung problems, while also addressing potential shortcomings in the hospital’s services.

The heart-wrenching incident unfolded when “Nong Me Tang” was admitted to Wang Wiset Hospital in Trang Province for a high fever. Shockingly, the hospital refused to transfer her to Trang Hospital, as requested by her parents, until her condition deteriorated severely. Sadly, she passed away soon after being transported to Trang Hospital.

Dr. Sinchai Rongdej, the Trang Provincial Public Health Doctor (Sor Sor Sor.), clarified that the child was initially treated at Wang Wiset Hospital on July 16, 2023. Only on July 19, three days before her death, was she referred to Trang Hospital for further treatment. Her condition worsened rapidly, with symptoms such as panting and depressed blood oxygen saturation. A pediatrician from Huay Yod Hospital was consulted, and attempts were made to increase her oxygen levels. However, her lungs appeared flat on an X-ray, causing concerns. Consequently, she was sent to Trang Hospital for further treatment.

During the transfer to Trang Hospital, the child went into shock and required cardiac pumping. Tragically, she later succumbed to pneumonia with ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) caused by air sac and lung tissue complications. In response to concerns raised by the case, the Trang Provincial Public Health Office has formed a committee to investigate the facts and ensure transparency. The committee, headed by Dr. Somkiat Phayuhasenarak, Deputy Chief Public Health Officer of Trang Province, aims to provide fairness and justice for both parties involved.

Regarding the service standards at Wang Wiset Hospital, Dr. Sinchai mentioned that the hospital had followed the established guidelines and protocols. The hospital, which does not have a dedicated pediatrician, ensured 24-hour care with seven doctors, who were all general practitioners. Dr. Sinchai acknowledged that there might have been some flaws in the hospital’s actions, and he vowed to address them promptly. The hospital will also dispatch officials to visit the bereaved family and hold a board meeting to determine if there was any medical malpractice that led to the tragic outcome. Should it be established that the hospital was at fault, compensation will be provided from the designated fund under section 41. In case of disagreement, the family can appeal the decision.

Dr. Panida Petcharat, the director of Wang Wiset Hospital, expressed her condolences to the family and assured that the hospital had provided the best possible care for the younger brother, emphasizing that such incidents should never occur again.

The investigation and evaluation of this case will be completed within two weeks or by the end of August. Dr. Trang’s push for fairness and transparency in healthcare, coupled with the Trang Provincial Public Health Office’s commitment to uncover the truth, aims to ensure justice for “Nong Me Tang” and prevent similar incidents in the future.
