Federal deputies Erika Hilton (PSOL-SP) and Duda Salabert (PDT-MG) and indigenous leader Txai Suruí are part of Time100 Next, a list from Time magazine that lists one hundred rising leaders around the world.

The list, released this week, is divided into five categories – artists, “phenomena”, innovators, leaders and rights defenders. While Hilton and Salabert are on the list of leaders, Suruí is among the rights defenders.

For Time, the two federal deputies, who are the first transgender parliamentarians in Brazil, went through a series of death threats and hate speeches in search of greater space in politics, but they did not let this reality limit them and prevent them from reaching to Congress.

The 26-year-old indigenous leader, who is a columnist for Folha, received attention for her work against the excesses committed by Brazil on issues such as the environment, illegal land invasion and climate change.

On social media, Hilton, 30, and Salabert, 42, thanked the nomination. They said they sought to change political representation and show that transgender people exist and deserve dignity.

Time100 Next is designed, according to the American publication, to tell inspiring stories, creating new possibilities for millions of people who today demand more space in society.

The three leaders are not the first Brazilians to appear in the ranking. In 2021, singer Anitta was on the list, in the artists category.
