The start is approaching for the sailors of the Transat Jacques Vabre! The 16th edition will be followed this Sunday, October 29, from 12:55 p.m., the time at which the boats must present themselves on the (virtual) starting line. It is broadcast live on France 3. This legendary race is celebrating its thirtieth anniversary this year.

For the occasion, nearly 200 sailors will set sail from the port of Le Havre, in Normandy. The arrival will once again be in Martinique, in Fort-de-France, as during the 2021 edition. Despite complex weather conditions, the departure is well maintained this Sunday, with some adjustments however, the route coastal was shortened and the Étretat buoy removed.

For this year, the big news is that not all sailors will start at the same time. A departure time has been set for each of the four categories. The fastest, the Ultim, will be the first to be able to cross the line at 1:05 p.m., before continuing, every twelve minutes, with the three other categories, namely the Ocean Fifty at 1:17 p.m., the Imoca at 1:29 p.m. notably with Clarisse Crémer , then the Class40s at 1:41 p.m.

As in previous years, each category will follow its own route, as detailed on the Transat website: “The Class 40s will remain in the North Atlantic with more than 4,500 miles to cover, with a passage through the island of Sal, which makes the Coffee Route the longest deckchair. The Ocean Fifty and Imoca will make a detour through the South Atlantic with a passage through the Brazilian archipelago of Sao Paolo and Sao Pedro for the monohulls and a passage through the island of Fernando de Noronha for the multihulls. A route which will force them to face the Doldrums twice and cover nearly 6,000 nautical miles. The Ultims will go even further south, to Ascension Island, before heading back towards Martinique with around 7,000 miles ahead of their bows.

Who will succeed the duo Charles Caudrelier and Franck Cammas, the title holders of the 2021 edition in the Ultim category? Start of response with the departure from Le Havre of the Transat Jacques Vabre this Sunday from 12:55 p.m. and on France 3.
