Reports have surfaced that the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the President to transfer Orissa High Court Chief Justice S. Muralitha as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court.

Born on August 8, 1961, Muralithar did his B.Sc. from Vivekananda College, Mylapore, Chennai. Studied Chemistry and then Law from Madras University and enrolled as an Advocate with the Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Bar Council on 12th September 1984. He completed Company Secretaryship in 1985 and Post Graduate in Law from Nagpur University in 1990.

Subsequently, in February 2003, he submitted his research paper on “Legal Aid and Criminal Justice System in India” and received his Doctorate in Law from Delhi University. He handled cases in Chennai and moved to Delhi in 1987 to join G. Ramasamy, then Additional Solicitor General of the Central Government, as a junior.

S. who handled cases in Delhi High Court and Supreme Court. Muralidhar was appointed as Additional Judge of Delhi High Court on 29th May 2006 and appointed as Permanent Judge on 29th August 2007. He was subsequently transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on 6 April 2020.

He has been serving as the Chief Justice of Orissa High Court since 31st December 2020. Currently, there are reports that the Supreme Court collegium has recommended to the President to transfer him as the Chief Justice of the Madras High Court. It is expected that the announcement in this regard may be made soon on the Supreme Court website.

Expertise in Constitutional Law and Administrative Law. Justice Muralidhar has a wife named Usha Ramanathan.

While a lawyer:

(1) He has handled public interest cases such as Bhopal gas disaster victims cases, cases related to mentally ill persons imprisoned in miserable conditions, cases related to people displaced by Narmada river dams.

(2) He is also appointed amicus arbitrator in the Supreme Court in cases involving public interest cases and death of convicts in prison.

(3) He has served in the Supreme Court Legal Affairs Commission and has been a member for two terms.

(4) Worked as Advocate of State Human Rights Commission, Election Commission of India and part time member of Law Commission from December 2002 to May 2006.

During his tenure as a judge, when he was hearing a case related to the 2020 Delhi riots, he had severely criticized the Delhi Police for not handling the riots properly and his transfer to the Punjab and Haryana High Court had become a talking point.
