The food waste undergoes all kinds of chemical processes. “We work with waste from supermarkets, among other things. These are products that have spoiled or are about to expire. Until now, they were used to make biogas. We are going a step further,” explains Sophie Roelants. She is manager of AmphiStar, a spin-off of the BBEPP and UGent that is cooperating in the development. “The food remains are treated so that they contain a lot of sugar. We release micro-organisms on them. These are animals that – just like people – love to eat sugar,” explains Sofie Lodens of BBEPP. She leads the project. “The sugars are converted by the organisms into bio-detergents. We can put them in cleaning products,” says Roelants. Using technology from another company, TripleW, lactic acids can also be extracted from the waste.
