City taxi central post

The Ministry of Commerce has just set new ceilings for urban taxi fares. A decision which comes against a backdrop of tensions surrounding the surge in fuel prices. And suspicions of corruption weigh on certain transport unions.

300 CFA francs per day, 350 CFA francs per night: taxi prices now regulated

In an official note released on February 15, Mincommerce specifies the new rules. For a daytime pickup with an urban taxi, the ceiling price is now 300 CFA francs. And 350 CFA francs for a night pick-up.

Concerning races with a deposit, it will now cost 2500 F CFA during the day, and 3000 F CFA at night. Specific rules also remain for pupils, students and people with reduced mobility (250 CFA francs during the day, 300 at night).

Increase in fuel prices: money between unions and government

While carriers complain about the increase in prices at the pump, the government has reportedly paid 2 million to certain unions to… justify this inflation. An awareness-raising operation which strongly resembles disguised corruption according to anonymous sources.

A controversy that comes at a bad time, when taxi drivers are already struggling to maintain their margins with the soaring price of fuel. Between social tensions and suspicions of shenanigans, the transport sector continues to crystallize passions in Cameroon.
