The spokesman for the interprovincial transport union assured on July 10 that if the Government provides them with security on the roads and the dialogues progress, they will not stop their activity.

Abel Gómez, manager of the National Federation of Public Passenger Transport of Ecuador (Fenacotip) reiterated that the union —which brings together bus transport cooperatives nationwide— “will turn off its engines” on July 16 and 17, 2024.

The measure will be taken, despite the fact that two other unions, the National Federation of Heavy Transport (Fenatrape) and the National Federation of Light Transport (Fenacotrali) announced agreements with the Government of Daniel Noboa on July 9, 2024, to avoid the shutdown of engines.

“We are sure that this will get the government’s attention,” said Gómez on July 10 in an interview with Teleamazonas. According to the Fenacotip spokesperson, in addition to the constant assaults on buses on the roads, representatives of the cooperatives are being victims of extortion in order to work.

Therefore, with the suspension of bus activities during those two days, the union hopes that the Government will take measures that are not short-term in order to reduce insecurity.

“Citizens, drivers, and transporters are asking ourselves what the roadmap is for security, and asking them to tell us what they are going to do… We decided to turn off our engines and ask the government for a roadmap as a public security policy,” said Gómez.

It’s just a ‘warning’ The leader also insists that the announcement of “turning off engines” does not imply a strike, “like the one in 2019.” “The strike is aggressive, we are going to pay for engines, this is to alert the Government that its policy is not yielding results,” he added.
