Travellers Confused by First International Arrivals at Western Sydney Airport

Australia’s newest aviation hub welcomed its first international arrivals on October 26, 2026, bringing immediate confusion for travellers who mistakenly booked flights to western Sydney instead of Western Australia or found themselves stranded without local transport.

I got confused, I saw Western Sydney. Air New Zealand flight NZ165 made history as the first international passenger aircraft to touch down at the runway at Badgerys Creek, arriving from Auckland with 142 passengers on board after decades of planning and construction.

Seven carriers have signed up to operate out of the facility.

Travellers Land at Wrong Airport in Sydney

The landmark opening took an awkward turn when one holiday-maker realized too late that his ticket had brought him across the Tasman Sea rather than across the Australian continent.

The passenger laughed off the detour after landing from Auckland.

He admitted, I thought it was Western Australia, and I’m meant to be in Perth, but look, it’s still pretty fun, so we’ll make the best of it.

He added that he realized the error by the time he boarded the flight but decided to continue anyway, noting, I’m on holiday, so it’s not the worst thing.

Another traveler, Julie Lundmark, found herself caught off guard after arriving on a Jetstar flight from Melbourne.

Originally from Sweden, she and a companion looked out the window upon landing and realized they had no idea where they were.

We landed here and looked out of the window and had no idea where we were. And we looked down the map and we thought to ourselves, ‘we are a little bit lost’.

The confusion deepened when Ms Lundmark attempted to locate her bearings online. Because the name west airport appeared on her boarding pass, a web search directed her toward the established Kingsford Smith airport in Sydney, where her car was actually parked.

Stranded Passengers Face Transport Hurdles

Stranded in western Sydney without her vehicle, Ms Lundmark faced a complicated transit dilemma.

While buses and a free shuttle operate between St Marys station and the airport until its metro link opens, reaching the original Sydney airport to collect her car would have required a two-hour journey. She resorted to making panic calls to the city to arrange a pickup.

Reflecting on her ordeal, Ms Lundmark offered a direct warning to others booking flights through the new facility: Double check, everyone, on your tickets before.

Singapore Airlines Launches New Daily Flights

Singapore Airlines is set to launch daily flights to Singapore on November 23, marking the next major phase in the facility’s international expansion as initial operations settle in following the first arrivals.

Additional carriers are planning separate services connecting western Sydney to Fiji, Vietnam, and Qatar at later dates.
