BOLZANO/BELLUNO. Nearly 20,000 people in just a few hours signed the online petition launched by for Alp on Change.org with the aim of protecting the Tre Cime di Lavaredo from excessive traffic: “This corner of paradise is threatened by the growing impact of car traffic, which brings with it pollution, noise and increasing pressure on the local ecosystem. The time has come to act to preserve this precious natural environment for future generations,” are the words of the promoters.

“Car traffic at Auronzo refuge has reached worrying levels”, the text reads. “With a capacity of around 700 parking spaces, the car park sees significant occupancy especially in the summer months, with an estimated average (which is very optimistic!) of over 65,000 vehicles that reach the area annually. This massive influx not only contributes to the‘air and noise pollutionbut also accelerates soil erosion and disturbs local wildlife. Excessive human presence is endangering the unique biodiversity of this region and is deteriorating the tourist experience itself, with deteriorated air and a less silent and serene environment.”

For these reasons, the authors of the appeal propose “the closure to private trafficwith the exception of electric vehicles or vehicles powered by renewable sources, of the road leading to the Auronzo refuge and the establishment of a line of electric or green energy powered buses. “This transition can serve as a model for other tourist destinations, promoting responsible and sustainable tourism.”
