Treant Opens New Infection Center to Combat Infectious Diseases

Treant, a hospital group in the North, is taking a proactive approach to combating and preventing infectious diseases with the opening of a new infection center on Wednesday. The center aims to tackle diseases such as sepsis and viral hepatitis, positioning Treant at the forefront of infectious disease treatment and prevention.

The new center brings together healthcare professionals from various departments including internal medicine/infectious diseases, infection prevention, medical microbiology, and hepatology. Additionally, the hospital pharmacy is also part of this collaborative effort. By combining the knowledge and expertise of these departments under one roof, Treant aims to provide comprehensive care for patients with infections and diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi.

One notable addition to the center is a new nursing department located at the Scheper hospital in Emmen. This department consists of six specialized beds for patients with complex, special, and resistant infections. Patients who have infections as their primary concern will be treated in this department. Conditions such as sepsis, spinal infections, and MRSA (hospital bacteria) fall under the purview of this new nursing department.

Dr. Sander van Assen, internist-infectiologist at Treant, emphasized the improvement in the quality of care offered by the new nursing department. The specialized team of nurses ensures that patients receive optimal care, and the center closely monitors the use of antibiotics. Dr. Van Assen highlighted the importance of prudent antibiotic usage, stating that overuse and misuse can render them less effective. With the establishment of the infection center, other departments within the hospital will have more space to focus on regular patient care.

General practitioners (GPs) and medical specialists face challenges when determining the appropriate treatment for patients with antibiotic allergies. However, the new infection center at Treant offers a solution. Patients suspected of having antibiotic allergies are examined to determine whether the allergies are genuine. Dr. Van Assen revealed that in the majority of cases, what was previously perceived as an allergy was actually a side effect of the antibiotics or an outdated allergy. Moreover, assumptions about cross-allergies between different antibiotics have often been incorrect. As a result, it is now believed that only 1% of the population is genuinely allergic to antibiotics, rather than the previously assumed 10%.

This new knowledge enables infectious disease specialists to be more effective in their use of targeted antibiotics. The infection center also conducts assessments to ensure patients throughout the hospital receive the correct antibiotic treatment. Treant’s commitment to responsible antibiotic usage is evident as the hospital has ranked among the top in terms of minimal antibiotic use.

The infection center doesn’t just cater to patients with bacterial infections but also provides a special focus on individuals with conditions such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and rheumatism. These patients often take immune response suppressing medications, making them more susceptible to infections. To address this, the infection center offers vaccinations to these patient groups, even if they plan to travel to distant countries.

Treant’s new infection center represents a significant step forward in the fight against infectious diseases. By combining expertise and resources, the hospital group aims to provide superior care, improve antibiotic usage, and enhance overall patient outcomes.]
