The most destructive earthquake in the history of Guatemala was the one that occurred on February 4, 1976, at 3:33 in the morning, with a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the department of Chimaltenango, about 50 kilometers southwest of Guatemala City.

The earthquake killed about 23,000 people, injured more than 76,000, and left more than a million people homeless. The destruction was widespread, affecting the country’s infrastructure, homes, educational and health centers, and communication systems, amounting to approximately one billion dollars in damage.
