Watan Al-Youm: The Director of the Department of Transport in the Amman Municipality, Engineer Muhammad Al-Saraheen, revealed that the Municipality intends to meet within the next two weeks with the Public Car Owners Association and taxi offices to present a study on raising the meter fare for the second time.
In a statement, Al-Sarhin reminded that the secretariat had previously proposed the idea, but it was rejected by the union
Al-Sarhin said: “If we agree to raise it during the scheduled meeting, we will work to raise the meter fee.”
Al-Sarhin confirmed that there is currently no direct support; Because “the government did not transfer allocations to the Secretariat as it was transferred to the Land Transport Regulatory Authority,” so the Secretariat is “unable” to disburse the fuel subsidy allowance for transportation in the capital.
He pointed out that the secretariat disbursed only one batch of support for public transportation in the capital during the current year after transferring allocations from the government.
For his part, Deputy Head of the Syndicate of Public Car and Taxi Agency Owners, Muhammad Shehadeh Al-Hadid, said that the union is under pressure from office owners and yellow taxi drivers in Amman to organize a protest in front of the Ministry of Transport in protest against their lack of support, similar to the governorates.
Al-Hadid demanded that public transportation in the capital be affiliated with the Land Transport Authority and not the Greater Amman Municipality, due to the lack of support allocations from the Municipality for them.
Al-Hadid pointed out that public transportation in the capital, Amman, received fuel support only once, while public transportation in various governorates of the Kingdom received support several times, and the Land Transport Regulatory Authority disbursed it to them because it falls within its jurisdiction, while public transportation lines within the capital are subject to it. Oman is within the jurisdiction of the Secretariat
Al-Hadid also called for controlling illegal smart transportation applications that, in his words, “have restricted” their livelihood
According to the union’s statistics: There are about 11,000 yellow taxi drivers, and about 5,400 service and coaster bus drivers working in the capital.
