Is Trevelin offering free rabies shots? Yes, the Municipality of Trevelin is offering free anti-rabies vaccinations for dogs and cats throughout July.
Jorgelina Silva, director of Zoonosis and Responsible Tenure, explained that the campaign is vital for preventing rabies. She noted past incidents, including a fox with the disease found at the end of last year and a bat detected in 2022, which raised community awareness.
Campaign Details and Importance
“We are talking about the only mandatory vaccine at the national level,” Silva stated. The vaccines are supplied by the nation and distributed to municipalities through the programmatic health area. This ensures availability for residents.
The vaccination drive takes advantage of the July vacation period to reach more residents. “We take advantage of vacations, that people may have a few days off, to launch this campaign extending the coverage precisely to the urban area,” Silva said. Dogs and cats over three months old are eligible.
Silva highlighted the community’s growing awareness. “We have been focused on this type of public health initiatives and, in that context, weighted that there is awareness in the community about the importance of cats and dogs generating their defenses before the disease of rage.”
These public health efforts are ongoing. Since the detection of a rabid bat in 2022, the municipality has consistently held activities and provided information, including educational talks for children and adolescents in schools.
Record Keeping and Control
Beyond vaccinations, the municipality is also advancing its animal registration program. “Every animal that receives sterilization is also patented. That extends our record and allows us to have greater control,” Silva explained.
