“The winners celebrate with a good wine, the loser (losers in English) only drink boxed wine”. Steeping a glass of alcohol and in front of the camera of her phone is one of the latest videos that records the social networks of Ricardo Javier González Latorrea lawyer from the Valparaíso Region accused of two crimes of homicide, and his alleged participation in other similar events.

The professional, according to the Public Ministry, would have used methanol mixed with alcohol to murder his victims to later collect their life insurance. Accusations that as of this Wednesday must be reviewed by the Oral Criminal Trial Court of Viña del Mar, where it will be decided whether or not González is guilty of the crimes he is accused of, and for which he risks life imprisonment.

The start of the case against the lawyer dates back to 2005. At that time, the subject hired Luis Olivares in Viña del Mar, whom he hired to carry out some construction work, which never materialized. Since then they established a friendly relationship, until in 2012 González contacted again who would be his first victim, this time not to offer him a job, but life insurance. The man took the offer and included his partner as a beneficiary.

Months after contracting the financial service, González contacted Olivares again, this time to invite him to the house to share. The appointed appointment took place, and on that occasion the lawyer offered different drinks to whom he said he considered his friend. However, according to the accusation in the investigation of the Public Ministry, at the time of serving wine with fruit, but adding a toxic substance. It was methyl alcohol, better known as methanol.

After several sips, the victim decompensated, at which time, according to the investigation, he was transferred to an empty site and away from Villa Alemana, where the subject operated. In this sector, the lawyer threw the body of the decompensated man, but he did not count on the fact that the victim would wake up hours later in very poor health conditions. As he could, Luis Olivares, in poor condition, got out of the pit where he was thrown and sought help. He managed to survive.

The second homicide, this time consummated, that the professional was accused of, occurred in 2018. That year, González met Natalia Véliz López, with whom he would supposedly start a nut business. In this context, the subject offered the woman to take out life insurance, something that finally came to fruition and Véliz contracted three benefits, supposedly for her daughters.

On June 28, 2018, the lawyer asked him to meet, supposedly to end the employment relationship they had, something that Véliz had requested. On that occasion, the subject invited her to a few drinks in her vehicle, serving her a glass of whiskey, and as with the other victim, she would add methanol.

After allegedly being in a high state of intoxication, González went on to drop Véliz off at his house. The next day, the woman could not get out of her bed, as she had severe stomach pains, vomiting and dizziness, although what caused the victim the most concern is that she lost her vision. All these symptoms finally caused her to be transferred to the hospital, where after days hospitalized without a clear diagnosis, she died on July 7, 2018.

The lawyer of the victim’s daughter, María Fernanda Cuevas, points out to La Tercera PM, that throughout the hospital treatment different theses of the diagnosis were considered. That until they asked one of the woman’s daughters to check her phone, finding her messages with González.

Cuevas maintains that within the woman’s WhatsApp there were conversations with the defendant in which she said “what did you give me? I feel very bad, I had drunk before but no beer is like that, I have never felt like this. I can’t see the screen, it’s hard for me to type. Ricardo told him, ‘we drink the same, sleep’.

For the same reason, on May 1, 2020, the PDI arrested González and since then he has remained in preventive detention, first in the Valparaíso Prison and during this last stage in the Quillota prison.

For these two facts, the Valparaíso Regional Prosecutor’s Office charges the lawyer with two crimes of qualified homicide, one of them consummated and the other as frustrated, the latter for the 2012 case. For these facts, prosecutor Hernán Silva has requested life imprisonment.

Cuevas, for his part, as the complainant, have adhered to the request of the Public Ministry. “For the family, achieving a conviction against Ricardo González would to a certain extent achieve justice for Natalia, and not only for her, but for all the other victims who are pending her cases,” says the lawyer.

The first of these dates back to 2004, when Maria Eliana Cadiz She went to live in Valparaíso with González, where she was finally found dead with two bullet wounds in a garbage dump. In that case, she also claimed more than $100 million in life insurance. The beneficiary? the same professional In this case, the prosecution decided not to persevere against the alleged murderer.

In 2016 there is also a case against González, a case in which a relative of a victim -who died in the same circumstances as the rest- will be part of the trial that begins this Wednesday, as will the relatives of the woman. murdered in 2004.

The plaintiff lawyer assures that “we are facing a serial murderer like never before seen in this country. This is because he uses highly elaborate methods and because he has acted with complete impunity for almost 20 years. This is one of the most serious and complex cases that have occurred, since it is not about violent deaths, but about highly planned murders, a form of commission that was analyzed by the defendant and that he could see a flaw in the insurance system, since he was the beneficiary of many people at the same time”.
