EL DIARIO VASCO will deliver tomorrow, free of charge, along with the newspaper, a special supplement on the occasion of the centenary of the birth of the sculptor Eduardo Chillida (Donostia, January 10, 1924). Over eighty pages, the coverage reviews the career of the San Sebastian artist through a series of reports that delve into his biography and his monumental work, with a design inspired by his brilliant strokes. The supplement delves into his most personal and intimate side, with testimonies from his family and collaborators, and also covers his facets as a goalkeeper for the Royal Society, his initiation trip to Paris and his return to Hernani’s workshop, from where he shapes through from the forge to the universal genius.
It also reflects his social and political commitment and, of course, his eternal legacy in the form of monumental sculptures, with his symbolic Comb of the Wind, emblem of Donostia, or his embrace of ‘Berlin’, as an example of his special connection with Germany and its international projection.
The supplement has opinion articles by the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez; the Lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, and the Deputy General, Eider Mendoza, among other institutional representatives, and also gives voice to experts from the world of Culture with directors of the main museums.
DV’s tribute to the sculptor also highlights the contemporary imprint of his work, through the creations of several artists who ‘reconstruct’ Chillida: the sculptor Koldobika Jáuregi, the photographer Jesús Uriarte, the writer Irati Goikoetxea, the illustrator Álvaro Martínez Bueno and the muralist Nextor Otaño, Nexgraff. A collective example of how one of the most important artists of the 20th century keeps his presence alive in the modernity of the 21st century.
