Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra has been expelled from the Lok Sabha, prompting a strong reaction from West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The decision to cancel Moitra’s membership was revealed by the BJP, sparking accusations of revenge politics and injustice.

“This is BJP’s revenge politics. They have butchered the people’s rule. This is injustice,” said Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. “Mahua will win the fight. People will give back to BJP. They will lose in the next election.”

Banerjee expressed her disappointment, calling it a sad day for Indian parliamentary democracy. “This is a great shame for parliamentary democracy. We condemn the act of expelling Mahua. The party is with them. BJP cannot defeat us in the elections. So they are playing revenge politics. Indian parliamentary democracy is cheating.”

The Lok Sabha approved the report of the Ethics Committee, which highlighted serious allegations against Moitra. The report revealed that Moitra’s login ID and password as a Member of Parliament had been compromised and used from India, UK, USA, and Nepal.

Opposition parties abstained from the vote to expel Moitra, demanding that she be allowed to speak. However, the report of the Ethics Committee found that Moitra had bought money and rewards from the Hira Nandani group, raising questions in Parliament.

In response to the expulsion, Congress pointed out that the Ethics Committee only has the power to determine whether MPs have committed misconduct and does not have the authority to recommend punishment.

The BJP defended the decision, with MP Hina Gavit referencing allegations of taking bribes during the UPA government’s tenure as reason for disqualification.

The expulsion of Moitra from the Lok Sabha has sparked a contentious debate, with accusations of revenge politics and injustice being at the forefront of the discussion. The political fallout of this decision is likely to have lasting implications for the future of Indian parliamentary democracy.
