The Tripoli Forum activities were launched with the participation of the Head of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dabaiba, the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, the President of Chad, Mohamed Deby, the Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, the President of the European Union Commission, Margaret Schinas, and the Prime Minister of Tunisia, Ahmed El-Hachani.
In his speech, Dabaiba stated that the forum aims to formulate a unified vision that enhances organized cooperation between countries concerned with migration.
Dabaiba added, “Libya found itself between the pressure of European rejection of immigrants, and the waves of immigration coming from the African desert.”
Dabaiba stressed that resolving the crisis begins by examining the conditions of the countries exporting immigration themselves.
Dabaiba described migration to Europe as a “journey of death,” saying that the desire to build a decent life is what drives migrants to cross the Sahara and the Mediterranean.
For her part, Meloni said that Libya is one of the priorities of the countries of the southern Mediterranean in the field of training and infrastructure development.
Meloni called for working on sharing mechanisms and synchronizing time between countries concerned with immigration.
In contrast, Chadian President Mahamat Deby said that the solution to the migration crisis begins with searching for its causes.
Deby added that the repercussions of the wars that Africa experienced were among the main reasons for migration.
Deby said that Africans in transit countries in North Africa do not have human rights laws applied to them.
For his part, Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela said that the European Union can provide solutions to the migration crisis by investing in source and transit countries.
Abela added that Malta faced several challenges in terms of immigration, stressing their quest for long-term solutions to this phenomenon.
For his part, Vice-President of the European Commission Margaric Schinas said that the forum is a major achievement for the Libyan government.
“We must bring all stakeholders to discuss migration,” Schinas added.
Schinas said that there are populist voices in Europe and beyond who are trying to isolate the stages of dealing with immigration, denying that this is their position, according to him.
