During last month’s elections, a massive outbreak of violence erupted in Tripura. Opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress and the CPM, have blamed the ruling BJP for the violence. Also during the local election campaign, Trinamool Congress youth wing leader Sonia Ghosh was arrested. It was also alleged that the BJP-winner then brutally assaulted Trinamool Congress volunteers with the help of police. The case was taken up in the Supreme Court. At the time, the Supreme Court refused to postpone the local elections. A total of 785 candidates were in the fray in the recent elections for 222 wards.
It is noteworthy that already 36 candidates withdrew their nominations. Meanwhile, Marxist Secretary of State Jitendra Chaudhary said, “The BJP-winners have threatened opposition candidates and withdrawn their nominations. BJP-sponsored thugs have attacked many of our volunteers. In five municipalities and two urban panchayats, our party has not been able to file nominations. “
In this situation, the BJP has registered a landslide victory in the local body elections and has shaken the political arena. The ruling Marxist party in Tripura has suffered a major setback with this election defeat. In the state, while other opposition parties are struggling to cope with the growing BJP, Mamata Banerjee is pushing for the strengthening of her Trinamool Congress party in Tripura to seize power in the coming assembly elections.
