Tropical Depression Strengthens into Tropical Storm Harold, Expected to Make Landfall on South Texas Coast

The National Weather Service has reported that Tropical Depression Nine, currently located over the central Gulf of Mexico, has intensified into Tropical Storm Harold. With sustained winds of about 35 mph, Harold is forecasted to reach tropical storm status once its winds surpass 39 mph before making landfall on the south Texas coast near Baffin Bay on Tuesday morning.

As of Monday afternoon, the storm was situated approximately 400 miles east-southeast of Corpus Christi, with wind speeds remaining at 35 mph. The NWS projects that the rainfall associated with Harold will predominantly impact the Rio Grande Valley, ensuring that the Dallas-Fort Worth area and Central Texas remain unaffected.

Forecasters are cautioning that this evening, Middle Texas coastal waters can expect to experience rain bands and tropical storm force wind gusts. During the overnight hours tonight, these effects will reach the coastal region of the Middle Texas coast. Moderate coastal flooding is anticipated for Tuesday, along with a high risk of rip currents. Additionally, isolated tornadoes could occur within the rain bands, moving across South Texas from early Tuesday morning into the afternoon.

Due to the intensification of the storm, a Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for various areas, including Aransas Islands, Bee, Calhoun Islands, Coastal Aransas, and Nueces Islands, among others. The storm is also anticipated to impact parts of northern Coahuila and northern Nuevo Leon in Mexico.

Residents in the storm’s path are urged to prepare for potential emergencies, including power outages, heavy rainfall, dangerous flooding, wind damage, and the possibility of tornadoes.

In light of the approaching storm, Texas emergency preparedness measures have been put into effect to ensure the safety and well-being of residents. It is crucial for individuals to stay updated with the latest forecasts and follow any evacuation or safety instructions given by local authorities. Taking necessary precautions and being prepared for any emergencies is paramount in ensuring the security of those living in the affected areas.
