Tropical Storm Calvin Approaching Hawaii: CNN Weather Updates

by time news

Tropical storm Calvin is approaching Hawaii’s Big Island, where a state of emergency has been declared and a tropical storm warning is in effect. With winds reaching 50 mph, Calvin is currently about 140 miles south of Hilo. The storm is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, and the possibility of flash flooding and mudslides. The National Weather Service in Honolulu predicts that Calvin will pass south of Hawaii County before weakening as it moves westward. Between 4 and 8 inches of rain are expected, with some areas seeing up to 10 inches. The windward and southeast flank of the Big Island will likely be most affected. Rainfall of 3 to 6 inches is expected on the windward areas of Maui, with 2 to 4 inches of rain forecasted for other areas of the state. Governor Josh Green has declared a state of emergency for the Big Island, and government offices are scheduled to close on Wednesday. Swells generated by Calvin are also expected to cause life-threatening surf conditions along exposed shorelines.
