Tropical Storm Ernesto slammed into the northeastern Caribbean today and is heading toward Puerto Rico, where local authorities have closed schools, opened temporary shelters for evacuees and even moved dozens of endangered native parrot species to protected areas. zones, the Associated Press reported.

Ernesto is expected to strengthen into a hurricane tomorrow morning as its eye tracks north of Puerto Rico toward Bermuda. Forecasters issued a hurricane warning for the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, as well as the small Puerto Rican islands of Vieques and Culebra, which are popular with tourists.

“Ernesto may approach hurricane strength over the next 24 hours,” the US National Hurricane Center in Miami warned this morning. Tropical storm warnings have been announced in a number of island countries in the Caribbean Sea, writes BTA.
The storm is forecast to pass over or near the US Virgin Islands tonight and its path will pass just northeast and north of Puerto Rico late tonight and tomorrow morning.
