Tropical storm Iliana forms; could hit Cabo San Lucas

He National Weather Service (SMN) alerted the population about the formation of the Tropical Storm Iliana; could touch Cabo San Lucas.

In his report of the 15:00 hours (Central Mexico time), Mexican authorities reported that the Tropical Depression Nine-E intensified to the point of becoming Tropical Storm Iliana.

The center of Iliana was located approximately 250 kilometers (km) west-southwest of Cape Corrientes, Jaliscoand 385 km south-southeast of Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur.

He SMN reported that at the moment the tropical storm has cloudy bands and in areas such as Colima, Jalisco, Nayarit and the south of Sonora Heavy rains could occur, and there may also be very heavy rains in southern Baja California Sur.

Regarding wind gusts, the National Meteorological Service indicates that they can reach 50 to 70 kilometers per hour (km/h) with waves of 2 to 4 meters (m) high and possible waterspouts on the coasts of Jalisco and Nayarit, as well as with waves of 1 to 3 m and possible waterspouts in Sinaloa, Colima and Baja California Sur.

The tropical storm also has maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h, wind gusts of 85 km/h and is moving north-northwest at 15 km/h.

Given these characteristics, the SMN warned the inhabitants of these states to stay away from rivers and streams, and to take shelter from the presence of electrical discharges and possible landslides.

The National Meteorological Service predicts that Iliana could make landfall in Los Cabos on the evening of Friday, September 13.

A second impact is expected on Sunday, September 15 between Huatabampo y Hermosilloas well as Navolato y Ahome, Sonora.

If this is the case, the tropical storm will probably dissipate by Monday and will remain on its path as planned by the SMN.
