Tropical Storm Shanshan brought torrential rain to the Shizuoka city area, southwest of Tokyo, in Japan today, which weather officials warned would last for several days, the Associated Press reported.

The speed of the winds accompanying the storm reached 65 km/h. On its way, “Shanshan” caused the death of six people, landslides, overflowing rivers, broken branches and scattered debris. In southwestern Japan, people were busy cleaning mud-covered homes and disposing of broken appliances, BTA reported.

One person was missing and 127 people were injured, according to Japanese public broadcaster NHK, which summarized information received by local authorities.

“Shanshan” is moving extremely slowly and has barely moved this evening, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

According to the agency, the storm caused rainfall over a wide area, even in places out of its path, such as the northernmost island of Hokkaido. Some homes tilted, there are collapsed roofs.

Shanshan initially passed through the southwestern islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, then reached the main island of Honshu.

People living in landslide-risk areas were told to evacuate to local stadiums and community centers. The Shanshan was expected to gradually move north tomorrow, then exit over the Sea of Japan.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said Shanshan was weakening, but another storm was developing near the Philippines that could become a typhoon.
