What bothers flight attendants about passengers

Crews are responsible for safety, service and operations during a flight. A recent survey reveals that some passengers make this task particularly difficult for the flight attendants.

Dhe work at an altitude of 10,000 meters in a confined space with hundreds of strangers has its pitfalls. After all, airline crews don’t just hand out food for a long time. In an emergency, they ensure that all passengers can exit the aircraft safely. In addition, mediator qualities are required in this job in order to take into account the sensitivities of extremely different passengers and to resolve conflicts.

For these reasons, if not out of courtesy then at least out of self-interest, everyone should treat airline employees with a modicum of respect. But that is obviously not always the case. The British newspaper “Daily Mail” recently asked airline employees via social media what bothers them most about their work.

The result is not representative, but devastating. After that, the trouble starts as soon as they board: many travelers don’t even manage to respond to a friendly greeting. Eye contact and at least a friendly nod would be a start.

It continues with illegal behavior such as not observing the seat belt obligation. This is not only mandatory for take-off and landing, but can be ordered at any time – for example in the event of turbulence. The same applies to the operation of electronic devices. If flight attendants ask you not to use any item anymore, then all discussions are actually superfluous.

After all, such instructions are not given arbitrarily, but are usually safety regulations. If the laptop has to be stowed away because it could endanger others as a projectile when taking off or approaching, then work or entertainment has to wait.

This complicates the work of the crew on the flight

The next points that annoy crews have one thing in common: recklessness. Even if it is not meant to be malicious, it signals that someone has forgotten to think along. There is no other way to explain why someone has to get up just when the crew is in the middle of serving out the food and the trolley is blocking the aisle. Anyone who wants to pass at such a moment forces the staff to interrupt the service and push the car all the way forward or back.

Perhaps it helps to know that all operations on flights follow a fixed choreography. After a meal there is a pile of rubbish on the tray, and many a guest cleans up this mess. That’s well intentioned. But instead of stacking all the bowls and crunching up the packaging, he should leave everything lying loosely on the tray because it’s easier to separate it afterwards.

More on the topic of hassle with flights:

Speaking of garbage: the longer the flight, the more of it accumulates. Napkins, burger boxes or bags of chips end up in the front pocket until it is full. But instead of giving the rubbish to the nearest airline employee, passengers should be patient. Would you like to take other people’s dirt into your bare hands? On long flights, the waste is collected again and again by the flight crew, who then patrol row after row wearing gloves and garbage bags.

Really annoying when passengers stretch their legs into the aisle. Of course, the space per passenger is shrinking more and more. But that doesn’t justify putting others – crew and fellow passengers – at risk as a tripping hazard. In addition, whoever is pushing the trolley can hardly see what is on the floor in front of him. And the trolleys with drinks or food are really heavy. Stupid, then, when they go over the toes.

One thing passengers should also respect: privacy. Nobody wants to be touched without being asked. If you need the help of a crew member, you should definitely not poke your finger at employees working in front of or behind you. That’s not only rude, it’s abusive.

The situation is similar when employees take a break. There are hardly any corners to retreat on the plane. Therefore, crew members should not be disturbed when they are eating or reading in the galley. After all, everyone deserves a break.

Here flight attendants learn how to protect themselves from beating attacks

Freaks out above the clouds are piling up. There were 4,400 cases in the United States alone in 2021. Cell phone videos show passengers being attacked. In Dallas, Air Marshals are now training flight crews in self-defense.
