Migrants Overturn Van on Mexican Highway
During the early hours of Wednesday, August 7, a serious accident occurred on the Coatzacoalcos-Minatitlán highway in Veracruz, Mexico. A truck traveling on the highway overturned, causing the vehicle to overturn on the side of the road.
Emergency personnel and security elements arrived at the scene. Upon reaching the incident area, they discovered that the passengers of the van were migrants of Chinese and Arab origin. Eleven of the migrants were arrested, while one was injured. The smuggler, identified as Cristian Francisco “N,” escaped after the overturning.
The incident occurred at kilometer 17+100 heading towards Minatitlán, Veracruz. Approximately 25 migrants were traveling in the van. Security elements cordoned off the area as part of their investigation.
In addition to the overturned truck, a crane was also dispatched to the scene to remove the vehicle. The truck had departed from Tabasco and was headed towards the United States.
The migrants were taken to the National Institute of Migration (INM) to be checked for injuries and determine their legal status. Their possible deportation to their countries of origin is being considered.
