MONACO. The Bavarian Economic Association (vbw), the Tyrolean Industrial Association (IV Tirol) and Confindustria Alto Adige jointly support the need for a free movement of goods through the Alps in a climate-friendly manner and in line with the needs of the population, the environment and the economy. The Brenner Pass is the busiest crossing point in the Alpine region for both road and rail transport. With 50 million tonnes of goods per year, it represents approximately 30% of the total freight traffic in the Alpine region. In this context, the Joint Declaration “Ensuring free and climate-friendly movement of goods through the Brenner Pass” was signed today by Heiner Oberrauchpresident of Confindustria Alto Adige, Max CleverPresident of the Tyrolean Industrial Association and Bertram BrossardtDirector General of the Bavarian Economic Association (vbw).
The three associations are calling for the following measures in particular: the EU must always guarantee the free movement of goods in Europe; the access routes to the Brenner Base Tunnel must be prioritised and implemented more quickly. The harmonisation of rail traffic must be continued; an appropriate infrastructure for alternative propulsion technologies must be developed rapidly; traffic restriction measures must be reduced to a minimum. The business community must be involved in the development of practicable solutions.
Bertram Brossardt he added: “First of all it is necessary put an end to interventions on the free movement of goodswhich are contrary to European law, and abolish the ban on night-time transit for trucks with emission class Euro 6, the best. We also need a clear timetable for the planning and construction of the Bavarian access route. We need to speed up the process and put an end to the sterile controversy over the route”.
Max Clever reiterated: “The most important transit route in Europe runs along the Brenner Pass and it plays a crucial role for Tyrolean industry and economy. The Brenner Pass is not only an important connection between northern and southern Europe, but also a symbol of economic cooperation and integration within the European Union. It is essential find solutions that protect the quality of life of our citizens and at the same time ensure the maintenance of economic efficiency. We need to find a balance between a functioning economy and protecting the environment and health.”
Heiner Oberrauch he clarified in conclusion: “We urgently need need for a common European solution that equally respects the needs of the population, the environment and the economy and that ensures safety on the roads. An economy that looks to our grandchildren requires that we jointly assume responsibility for future generations in a constructive dialogue Bans and unilateral measures by individual countries are definitely the wrong way to address climate change. They only lead to pollution shifting to neighboring regions.: queues and blocked traffic lead to further environmental pollution and an increase in CO2 emissions. This will not lead to a reduction in overall emissions”.
