From the penultimate day of August until the end of September, Kresala Zinecluba will show three really interesting films at the Truena cinema in Donostia: August 30th, September 13th and September 27th. If you look at the calendar, you will notice gaps in the two weeks of September, but they had good reasons to jump from August 30 to September 13, as well as for the jump from the 13th to the 27th. The second week of September actually has two public holidays in Gipuzkoa, the 6th and the 9th. From the 16th to the 24th, the Donostia Film Festival will be responsible for filling the city with cinema.

On the first day, August 30, the film ‘Varjoja Paratiisissa’ (‘Shadows in Paradise’/’Sombras in the Paradise’) directed by Aki Kaurismaki will be shown. This first retrospective film, from 1986, is the first part of the ‘Proletarian trilogy’. The protagonist is Nikland, the driver of a garbage truck. One night, his colleague will die and his life will be completely messed up. To make matters worse, he falls in love with a supermarket worker named Ilona.

From Finland to Lebanon, from a film from a long time ago to one from last year. In fact, it will be possible to see ‘Costa Brava, Líbano’ by the young director Mounia Akl on September 13. The film, which was released in 2021, was written by the director together with Clara Roquet, and was originally a dystopia set in 2030, although, as both pointed out, the dark reality depicted when filming began was worse than depressing. The protagonists are members of the Badri family. The people of Badri have moved away from the city to build their utopia, but the oasis they wanted to create will soon be in danger, between external and internal problems.

Kaurismaki’s ‘Ariel’ (1988) will be the last of this series. As Simpsia says, “Taisto Kasurinen has been imprisoned for a crime he did not commit. While in prison, his dream is to start a new life outside his country. One day he manages to escape, but things don’t turn out the way he thought.’ Tickets are on sale here, with a price of 6 euros.
