Trump Announces Permanent U.S. Military Presence in Greenland Security Deal

President Donald Trump announced a security agreement with Denmark and Greenland establishing permanent U.S. security control, no-expiry defense terms, and a planned military footprint expansion on the Arctic island, as confirmed by administration statements and regional officials on Friday.

Truth Social Announcement and the New Arctic Security Framework

The United States has entered into an agreement with Denmark and Greenland that will establish a significant U.S. military presence on the island while barring foreign adversaries from building bases there, President Donald Trump announced on Friday. Writing on Truth Social, the president stated that the pact carries no expiration date and places strict controls over who may invest in the mineral-rich territory.

In his social media post, Trump wrote that “at my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America.” He further claimed that the agreement gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing all of our many U.S. concerns.

The announcement follows months of heightened tension stemming from Trump’s return to the White House last year, during which he repeatedly called on Denmark to sell the island, pointedly refusing to rule out taking the territory by force from the NATO ally. Denmark and Greenland consistently maintained that the island was not for sale and condemned reports of the U.S. gathering intelligence there, while European nations and Russia voiced opposition to U.S. territorial ambitions in the Arctic.

Specific Terms Governing Permanent Defense and Investment Restrictions

The agreement stops short of transferring sovereignty over the territory to the United States, according to exclusive reporting by Reuters, which noted that the deal stops well short of Trump’s long-held dream of acquiring the island for the United States.

Under the terms described by the administration, Washington gains permanent control over security and all other needs, in an arrangement that completely addresses U.S. strategic concerns in the high north.

“Additionally, from now on, no U.S. adversary can EVER have a base in Greenland, have a military presence in Greenland, or make sensitive investments in Greenland, without our express written approval.”

Plans for an Expanded Military Footprint Across Greenland

With the framework now in place, Washington intends to immediately begin the process of developing a larger military presence on the Danish territory. Trump noted that plans will begin immediately to build a significant U.S. military footprint in suitable areas across Greenland, noting there are numerous potential locations.

The move marks a shift from months of diplomatic friction and intelligence-gathering disputes. While the Danish embassy in Washington had no immediate comment following the announcement, and neither Denmark nor Greenland has issued an official response yet beyond regional ministerial statements, leadership signaled a cooperative path forward.

Múte Bourup Egede, Greenland’s foreign affairs minister, stated on social media that a deal was within reach that would strengthen security for the U.S., Greenland and their allies.
