The findings come from a new survey, which also indicates that 60% of U.S. adults now disapprove of Trump’s performance. This decline in support is evident even among his own voters: only 85% of those who cast ballots for him in 2024 approve of his job, down from 88% in June and 95% shortly after the election. Support has also wavered among nonvoters.

Key Initiatives Face Criticism

Trump’s declining job approval coincides with voter concerns about several prominent policy initiatives. The survey revealed that 61% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s tariffs. He has enacted a wide-ranging program of levies on goods imported from various trading partners.

Furthermore, a majority of Americans oppose Trump’s signature tax law, which included significant reductions in taxes and steep cuts to programs like Medicaid. The survey found 46% disapprove of the law, while 32% approve and 23% are undecided.

Epstein Handling Draws Bipartisan Concern

The president’s handling of information related to Jeffrey Epstein has also generated significant bipartisan concern. A substantial 70% of Americans disapprove, including 53% of Republicans and those who lean Republican.

Epstein, a wealthy financier with ties to Trump and other notable figures, died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. The administration has faced pressure to disclose additional case documents.

The survey also indicates that a majority of Americans believe Trump is hindering, rather than improving, the functioning of the federal government.

Personal Attributes Questioned

While 68% of Americans acknowledge Trump stands by his convictions, fewer view him positively on other fronts. Only 36% consider him honest, and a mere 29% see him as a good role model. These perceptions were gathered from the survey conducted Aug. 4-10 among 3,554 adults.
