New York: A second attempt was made on Sunday to kill former US President Donald Trump. Trump spoke about this publicly for the first time on Monday. He said, ‘Maybe God wants me to save this country.’ The Republican Party’s presidential candidate said that he suddenly heard the sound of bullets while playing golf but he could not understand what happened. He said that the Secret Service put him in a golf cart and took him to a safe place. Trump said, ‘I was playing golf with some of my friends, it was Sunday morning and the weather was very peaceful, beautiful, suddenly we heard the sound of bullets being fired in the air.’ Trump said that about four or five bullets were fired but I could not understand anything. The former president said, ‘The Secret Service immediately realized that these were bullets and they caught me.’ Trump gave this information in an online interview on X Spaces on Monday. Trump said, ‘We rode in the carts and moved forward. We moved out of that way.’ Praising the security personnel of the Secret Service, the former president said that the agents ‘did a great job, no doubt about it.’ He said, ‘The bullets we heard were fired by the Secret Service.’ Trump said that he wanted to continue playing (golf), ‘but we decided to leave from here.’
Failed attempt to assassinate Trump
The former president said that unlike the failed assassination attempt in July, in which a person from the audience was killed, this time the ‘result was much better’. There was an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate Trump at a rally held in an open field in Pennsylvania. Trump praised the woman, a civilian, who followed the alleged potential shooter and took pictures of his vehicle. He said that she did a ‘phenomenal’ job. The Republican presidential candidate said, ‘How many people would have the sense to follow him (the accused) and take pictures of the back of his truck, that too with the license plate number which can help law enforcement agencies trace that person.’ The former president called Ryan Wesley Routh, the accused in the incident, a ‘very dangerous person’.
Routh had donated to a political action committee supporting Democratic Party candidates and also participated in the party’s primary elections. He wrote in a book that Iran is ‘free to assassinate’ Trump. Routh was produced in federal court on Monday. He was charged with illegally possessing a gun and erasing the serial number from an SKS-style rifle. He is a convicted felon. Earlier in an interview with Fox News Digital, Trump blamed President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the attempted attack. He said, ‘Rauth believed the rhetoric of Biden and Harris and acted accordingly.’ The former president said, ‘Because of their rhetoric, I am being shot, while I am the one who is going to save the country.’
