Trump at first campaign rally complains about ‘Stalinist’ investigations | Abroad

Former President Donald Trump has used his first campaign rally in the run-up to the US presidential election in 2024 to complain to his audience about the investigations that are underway against him. Speaking at a rally in Waco, Texas, he said the investigations could be “straight out of a Stalinist horror show.”

According to the former head of state, there has been “one witch hunt after another” and “fake investigations” from the beginning. Many in attendance also carried placards with the words “witch hunt” written on them.

In New York, an investigation is underway into the hush money paid to a porn star who allegedly had sex with Trump. That payment was made shortly before the presidential election won by Trump in 2016. The hush money may have violated the rules on financing the election campaign.

Marjorie Taylor Greene, one of Trump’s most vocal supporters in Congress, told the crowd it’s time to “take back” the Justice Department. “Don’t get me wrong, they’re not just going after President Trump, they’re coming after you. And President Trump is the only one who can stand in their way.”

The meeting in Waco came as the city commemorates the FBI’s raid on the religious sect of the Branch Davidians and their leader David Koresh thirty years ago. In 1993, 86 people were killed, including four police officers. Many right-wing extremists view the raid as a key moment of government involvement, and critics see the rally as a show of support for Trump’s far-right supporters.
