ROME – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has stated that the world is seeing “glimpses of peace” following recent negotiations between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Meloni also underscored the critical importance of security guarantees for Ukraine.
Meloni: Ukraine negotiations offer hope for peace
Meloni highlighted the potential for a peace agreement, especially after a prolonged stalemate on the front lines, while stressing Ukraine’s right to dictate its own terms.
- Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni views Trump-Putin talks as a positive step toward peace for Ukraine.
- She emphasized that any agreement must be negotiated by Ukraine on its own terms.
- Security guarantees for Ukraine are crucial to prevent future Russian aggression, Meloni stated.
- Meloni indicated Trump supports an Italian proposal for security guarantees based on NATO’s Article 5, but outside the formal NATO framework.
- Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to travel to Washington for negotiations with Trump.
Meloni’s comments, released following Trump’s discussions with Putin in Alaska, suggest an emerging opportunity for a peace settlement. “I think it is positive that glimpses of peace appear for Ukraine,” Meloni said in a statement. “The achievement of an agreement, as before, is complex, but, finally, possible, especially after a multi-month impasse on the front line.”
She firmly stated that Ukraine alone has the authority to negotiate its conditions and on its own territory. The issue of security guarantees for Ukraine, she added, remains paramount to prevent any new Russian invasion.
“And it was in this aspect that the most interesting news was recorded in Anchorage,” Meloni remarked. She is convinced that only robust and dependable guarantees can avert future wars and aggression.
Meloni also revealed that Trump expressed support for an Italian proposal concerning security guarantees for Ukraine. This proposal is reportedly modeled after Article 5 of the NATO treaty, which mandates collective defense, but would operate outside of NATO itself.
“The starting point of the proposal is to determine the provision on collective security that would allow Ukraine to count on the support of all its partners, including the United States, ready to take measures in the event of a new attack,” Meloni explained. She added that European states remain united in their support for Ukraine at this stage of negotiations.
Meloni concluded that while the path to peace is challenging, the choice to pursue it is significant. Reports indicate that Trump and European allies have indeed discussed security assurances for Ukraine in a manner resembling Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, though not under NATO’s direct umbrella.
It has also been reported that Donald Trump informed European counterparts that Putin is seeking an immediate “peace agreement” rather than a ceasefire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to travel to Washington for negotiations with Trump on Monday.
Meloni believes the talks offer “glimpses of peace” for Ukraine and highlighted the importance of security guarantees.
