Regarding the first TV debate between Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump on the 10th (local time), major media outlets, conservative commentators, independent voters, and even Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a supporter of Trump, diagnosed that Harris, who had been reluctant to interact with the media due to various verbal gaffes since taking office as Vice President in 2021, “did an unexpectedly good job.” However, there is also analysis that there was no “decisive move” that would have swayed the outcome of this presidential election, which is one of the closest races in history.
Candidate Harris also showed a cautious attitude, saying that although she won the debate, “there is a lot to do in the remaining 56 days (until the election on November 5).” On the other hand, candidate Trump claimed his victory on the social media site ‘TrueSocial’, saying, “It was the best debate ever.”

Politico diagnosed, “Harris provoked Trump’s irritation. When Harris threw out the ‘bait,’ Trump kept biting.” This means that when Trump, who was caught up in Harris’s attacks, debated areas favorable to him, such as illegal immigration and high prices, he was quick to defend instead of going on the offensive. The New York Times commented, “Trump only reacted (to Harris’s attacks).” The BBC also diagnosed that Trump failed to effectively ‘punch’ Harris’ attacks.
Some of Trump’s aides told CNN that they were “frustrated by the fact that he lost his composure several times.” They complained that Harris’s inappropriate answers were overshadowed by Trump’s inability to focus on the core message. Musk, who is rumored to be in office if Trump wins, also wrote on “X” that “Harris has exceeded expectations.”
“It was almost a Harris win,” said Britt Hume, an analyst for Fox News, a pro-Republican media outlet. Another conservative commentator, Eric Erickson, also said, “Trump lost,” and added, “Complaining about the moderator doesn’t change the outcome of the debate.”
Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, said the Trump campaign was negligent in preparing for the debate, saying, “The person who prepared the debate should be fired.”
The Washington Post (WP) reported that 23 out of 25 swing state voters who had not yet decided on a candidate said after the debate that “Harris did better.” A voter in his 40s who leaned toward Trump said, “Trump missed too many opportunities.”

However, the New York Times analyzed that in this TV debate, “there seemed to be no ‘decisive blow’ that would fundamentally change the dynamics of the ultra-close presidential election.” Politico also diagnosed that “Trump still has complete control of the Republican Party and is very likely to re-enter the White House.” Democratic campaign strategist Maria Cardona also told Fox News that “before the debate, the two candidates were competing within the margin of error, and it was the same after the debate.”
According to Real Clear Politics (RCP), an election analysis site, on the 11th, Harris and Trump secured 208 and 219 of the 538 electoral votes that determine the presidential election winner, respectively. In Pennsylvania, which is considered a key battleground state, the two candidates are tied at 47.6% each.
However, Bloomberg reported that in the gambling market predicting the winner of the presidential election, Harris’s chances of victory have increased.
