“I have decided that Senator JD Vance, from the great state of Ohio, is the best person to be vice president of the United States,” Donald Trump said on his network, Truth Social, on Monday afternoon. The latter will give a speech on Wednesday evening.

A former soldier and successful author, this 39-year-old elected official with an eclectic profile continues to defend in Congress the causes that the former businessman respects, such as the fight against the immigration and conservation protection. But before he defended Donald Trump tooth and nail, JD Vance was not short of criticizing the billionaire. When he called himself “Guy who will not be pro-Trump,” he has also in the past called the tycoon “idiot” and “harmful,” even worried that he is “the Hitler of Trump”.

Before joining Washington, JD Vance had an atypical career, to say the least. He grew up in a modest single-parent family in the “Rust Belt,” a region of the northeastern United States that had suffered a major industrial decline, and then joined the military. He then studied law at one of the country’s leading universities, before pursuing a career in Silicon Valley. But it was a book, “Hillbilly Elégie”, published in 2016 that made him known. In this autobiographical story that became a bestseller and was adapted for the cinema, JD Vance recounts his chaotic childhood in a white America plagued by unemployment and addiction, and gives voice to a disillusioned and declassified working population, full of of harm. It was only later that he became involved with the Trumpist movement.

Joe Biden, a candidate for re-election, accused JD Vance on Monday of trying to implement pro-rich policies, while his campaign team promoted anti-abortion “extremists”. “He and Trump want to raise taxes on middle-class families while favoring tax cuts for the wealthy,” XJD president Vance declared that he is an “extremist” who “denies the outcome of the 2020 election, who supports the national ban on abortion,” Biden’s campaign team also lambasted, still on X.

Thousands of police

The announcement of the Trump-Vance “ticket” is the first highlight of an already historic convention: thousands of Republicans gathered in Milwaukee almost lost their hero, who was targeted by gunfire during an open-air meeting on Saturday. Thousands of police officers are deployed on the streets of the former industrial city, under high tension.

The site chosen for the convention is a huge sports complex, the walls of which are covered with large photographs glorifying the 45th President of the United States, who also wants to be the 47th. The main themes of the convention are purchasing power, immigration, crime and the security that guarantees a strong America.

But the climax of this institutional and festive event will come on Thursday, when Donald Trump formally accepts to be the official Republican candidate for the election. An evening that promises to be spectacular, with the release of 100,000 red, white and blue balloons.

The Republican Party chooses Trump as its presidential candidate

Republican delegates meeting in Milwaukee on Monday nominated Donald Trump to be their candidate for the November 5 presidential election, a mission that the septuagenarian will formally accept on Thursday, in a speech that will be the climax of the party’s convention.

Unsurprisingly, more than half of the roughly 2,400 delegates chose the former Republican president, with state-by-state voting continuing.

An image in everyone’s head

But the image that is on everyone’s mind, and that has gone around the world, is the image of Donald Trump with a bloody ear, a branded fist, hastily evacuated by his bodyguards and campaign in Pennsylvania. This attack shocked an increasingly polarized American society, angering the most radical Trump activists, who openly accuse Democrats of taking responsibility.

With over 50,000 participants, the event already promises to be an ultra-secure event. The entire perimeter of the city center is fenced off by large metal gates and patrolled by agents of the Secret Service, the elite police force that has come under strong criticism for not properly protecting Donald Trump during his open-air rally on Saturday.

But the compact program of the convention is kept. “Other than enhanced security measures outside the perimeter, there will not be a single change to the schedule,” David Bossie, a close friend of Donald Trump who co-chairs the convention, told AFP. “This represents four evenings of prime-time television that we are extremely proud of, which we are not going to modify because of a tragic incident,” he says.
