According to an AP report that day, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said, “Former President Trump was the target of an assassination attempt,” and announced that they were investigating the case. Earlier, the Secret Service (SS), which is in charge of protecting former President Trump, reported that while former President Trump was playing golf at the West Palm Beach International Golf Club in Florida, a shooting incident that appeared to be an assassination attempt occurred nearby.
According to reports, Secret Service agents found a gunman near the scene of the incident and opened fire after the man appeared to be pushing the gun into the golf course fence. Former President Trump was reportedly about 400 to 500 yards (365 to 457 meters) away from the suspect.
The suspect was arrested by police while fleeing in an SUV. An AK-type firearm was also reportedly recovered near the golf course.
Martin County Sheriff William D. Snyder told WPTV that the suspect “didn’t ask any questions when he was arrested, like, ‘What’s going on?’ He seemed relatively calm and his facial expression barely changed.”
Meanwhile, Trump campaign spokesman Stephen Chung released a statement confirming the facts, saying, “Former President Trump is safe.”
Former President Trump also said, “There were gunshots around me, but before the rumors got out of hand, I wanted you to hear this first. I am safe and sound.”
He added, “Nothing can stop me. I will never give in. I will always love my supporters.”
The White House, which heard the news, also said that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the incident and were relieved to hear that former President Trump was safe.
Vice President Harris told X, “I’m glad former President Trump is safe. There is no place for violence in America.”
Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, the Republican vice presidential candidate, also said he was glad that the former president was safe. “I spoke with the former president before the news broke,” Vance told X. “He was surprisingly in good spirits.”
“I don’t know the details yet, but I want to hug my children and say a prayer of thanks tonight,” he added.
Former President Trump was previously shot above his right ear during an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13. This shooting incident occurred two months after his ear injury.
