US President Donald Trump’s weekend visit to Ireland has triggered one of the largest security and policing operations in the history of the Garda Síochána, with 10,000 twelve-hour shifts deployed across Dublin and County Clare amid sweeping road closures and strict aviation restrictions.
An Unprecedented Security Mobilization Across Dublin and Clare
The arrival of Donald Trump on Air Force One at Dublin Airport marks the beginning of a tightly controlled two-day itinerary spanning the capital and the west coast. The Garda Síochána formally declared an extraordinary event to manage the high-stakes diplomatic visit, placing officers across 10,000 twelve-hour shifts from Friday through Sunday. Authorities confirmed that the deployment ranks as one of the biggest security and policing operations ever carried out by the force.
Mr Trump will be in Ireland on September 12 and 13 for engagements in the capital Dublin as well as at his golf resort in Doonbeg, Co Clare, which will be hosting the Irish Open. Garda Assistant Commissioner Paul Cleary and Commissioner Justin Kelly oversaw preparations that involved extensive sweeps by specialized units. A Garda Water Unit member checks ponds in the vicinity of Áras an Uachtaráin and Farmleigh ahead of Donald Trump’s visit, while Gardaí check ponds around Phoenix Park and preparations take place at the US Ambassador’s residence. Two water cannon brought in from Northern Ireland bolster the visible security footprint.
Travel Disruptions, Closures, and Airspace Restrictions
Commuters and travelers face significant logistical hurdles as rolling road closures grip major thoroughfares. There will be rolling road closures in place around the airport from 7.30am until 9.30am and between 11.30am and 1.30pm. Traffic restrictions are already in place on the perimeter roads around Dublin Airport, the R108, the R132 and the Old Airport Road and they will remain in place until tomorrow afternoon. The peak times for these restrictions is also expected to be between 8am and 9am and 12pm and 1pm. There is no parking on any of the perimeter roads tomorrow and the ‘Mound’ viewing point on the Old Airport Road will be open, but only for pedestrians. Other viewing points will not be open to the public. Temporary traffic restrictions will be in place on the M50 motorway, with the peak times for these restrictions expected between 8am and 9am and 12pm and 1pm between Junction 3 and Junction 6.
Dublin Airport advises passengers travelling to the airport on Saturday morning and early afternoon to allow extra time for their journey due to possible rolling road closures in the vicinity of the airport. Passengers are advised to use traffic apps and check the latest updates from TII and GardaTraffic before travelling. Dublin Airport will operate as normal but passengers are being advised to allow extra time for their journey as they may not be able to access the airport via their usual route, and may need to take an alternative, potentially longer, route.
As a result of all of this, the Phoenix Park is closed to the public until events finish. That means attractions such as Dublin Zoo and the Magazine Fort will be closed to visitors, with access restricted for essential staff working within. In County Clare, roads in and around Doonbeg village, including the N67 between Clonadrum Cross in the north and Doonbeg in the south, have been restricted since Thursday, September 11, and will remain so until Sunday evening. Drone restrictions are also in place around the airport and in other areas, including flight and drone bans covering airspace above both the airport and the Doonbeg golf course, alongside a maritime exclusion zone in waters off County Wicklow.
While both Dublin and Shannon airports maintain normal scheduled operations, passengers are urged to allow extra journey time. Travelers heading through Shannon face additional security screening and must carry photo identification and valid flight documents. Protest groups are expected at both Shannon Airport and in Doonbeg village.
High-Level Meetings and Local Economic Stakes
Once he arrives in Dublin, Mr Trump will travel by car to the Phoenix Park for meetings with President Catherine Connolly and Taoiseach Micheál Martin. He will meet President Connolly at Áras an Uachtaráin and Mr Martin at Farmleigh House. He is also expected to make a speech at US Ambassador Edward Walsh’s Deerfield Residence in the park. Several Cabinet Ministers have said they will attend the event, among them Helen McEntee, Martin Heydon, and Hildegarde Naughton.

Ms McEntee said. She added that it is a mutually beneficial link which sees Irish companies creating jobs in the US along with the employment generated by US companies here. It is important that we invest in that relationship, particularly at a time where we perhaps don't always agree on every policy issue,
she said.
Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Doonbeg
After completing his schedule in Dublin, Trump will fly from Dublin to Shannon Airport in County Clare to attend the Irish Open at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg, and he is due to depart from Shannon on Sunday evening. Access to Trump International Golf Links and Hotel Doonbeg is limited to ticket holders and staff. There is no on-site parking or pedestrian entry route; all spectators must use designated park-and-ride bus transfers. Airport-style bag checks will be in place at the venue, and only small bags are permitted, with Gardaí urging golf fans to build in significant extra time to clear ticket checks and security search zones.
