Debate over high prices, taxes, immigration issues, etc.
Harris, first shakes hands before debate… then attacks by highlighting ‘silencing sexual harassment’
Trump gets excited when mentioning economy and illegal immigration… barely looks at Harris throughout debate
“Let’s have a good discussion.”
On the 10th (local time), Democratic presidential candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris was the first to shake hands with Republican presidential candidate and former President Donald Trump during the first TV debate held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Some say that Trump’s response was tantamount to a “declaration of war” that showed who would lead the debate that day. On June 27th, during the debate between Trump and then-Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, the two candidates did not shake hands.
Harris, a former prosecutor, strongly attacked Trump on issues such as abortion, the economy, illegal immigration, and foreign affairs. She constantly stared at Trump, shaking her head and wiggling her eyebrows, expressing with her whole body that she “doesn’t agree with what you’re saying.” She highlighted that Trump is a felon who was convicted in a criminal trial for “silencing a sexual harassment case,” and claimed that the crowds at his presidential campaigns are small.
Trump, who was furious, lost control of the debate by not being able to hide his excitement when he mentioned issues that were considered favorable to him, such as high prices and increased illegal immigration. He barely looked at Harris’ face throughout the debate. However, he did not make any abusive remarks about non-white people or women, as some had feared, earning the evaluation that he “avoided the worst.”
● Harris, Trump’s ‘provocation’
From the beginning of the debate, Harris avoided direct answers to questions that were disadvantageous to her and harshly attacked Trump. When asked by the moderator, “Do you think the U.S. economy is better than it was four years ago?” Harris did not answer, but instead changed the subject to Trump, a real estate mogul who “wants to cut taxes for billionaires and corporations. He also wants to impose a 20% ‘Trump consumption tax’ on everyday goods.”
He also criticized the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a prestigious business school, saying, “Wharton also said that Trump’s (various economic) plans would explosively increase the U.S. fiscal deficit.”
Trump responded, “There was no inflation during my presidency,” and “They destroyed the economy.” He also pointed out that “Harris has no policies.” Trump said that since the inauguration of the Biden administration, illegal immigration has increased significantly, and various crimes have also increased. He claimed that “Crime rates in Venezuela and countries around the world have gone down because[Harris]brought criminals to the United States.”
When Trump mentioned the increase in crime, Harris said, “This is coming from someone who has been charged with national security crimes, economic crimes, and election interference.” She also mentioned that the sentencing of Trump’s guilty verdict in the case of covering up sexual harassment is scheduled for November, the year of the presidential election. She emphasized the various legal risks Trump is facing.
● Trump continues personal attacks
Trump attacked Harris for changing her tune from opposing fracking, a shale gas extraction method that is important to residents of Pennsylvania, where the debate was held, to supporting it. He also claimed that Harris cannot be free from the Biden administration’s weaknesses, such as high prices and increased illegal immigration.
When Harris criticized her, saying, “It’s a tragedy that someone who has consistently tried to use race to divide the American people wants to be president,” he avoided the debate, saying, “Whatever Harris wants to be, I’m fine with that. That’s up to her.” Trump claimed that Harris, who is of mixed Jamaican and Indian descent, has previously highlighted her Indian heritage but is now pretending to be black during the presidential campaign to appeal to black voters.
Trump, who had maintained a calm response in a low voice at the beginning of the debate, seemed to lose his composure somewhat in response to Harris’s provocation. In particular, his voice became louder in the latter half and he said, “People don’t go to Harris’s rallies. He rents buses and pays to gather people.” He also made personal attacks, saying, “Harris is a Marxist,” and “The Democrats chased Biden away like a dog.”
The New York Times (NYT) analyzed that “Harris spent 46% of her speech attacking Trump, while Trump spent only 29% of his speech attacking Harris.” This means that Trump, faced with strong attacks from Harris, spent a significant portion of his speech time explaining himself.
