Donald Trump, 78, is losing support because of his age, according to a new Ipsos poll. The survey of 1,241 U.S. adults, including 1,018 registered voters, found that 53 percent of respondents believe Trump is too old to serve in government, while 43 percent disagree.

The results come amid a vigorous campaign by Kamala Harris, who was confirmed as the Democratic nominee after Joe Biden dropped out of the race. Biden, 81, ended his campaign amid concerns about his age and health, under pressure from both Republicans and within his own party.

The poll also found that 56% of respondents thought Harris, 59, was “mentally sharp and able to handle challenges,” compared with just 22% who rated Biden that way. The poll had a margin of error of 3%.

Harris, who raised more than $100 million for her campaign between Sunday and Monday, has already secured enough delegates to clinch the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination. In an Ipsos poll, she holds a slim 2-point lead over Trump, 44 percent to 42 percent.

At the same time, the appearance of independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on the hypothetical ballot resulted in a decline in Trump’s support: Harris received 42% of the vote, Trump 38%, and Kennedy 8%, a result well outside the margin of error.

Trump campaign pollster Tony Fabrizio argues that Harris’s rise is temporary due to the media coverage of her new candidacy. At the same time, a Morning Consult poll found Trump still leading Harris by two points, 47% to 45%.

However, the gap between Trump and Democrats is narrowing. In the previous Morning Consult poll, conducted July 15-17, Trump led Biden by four points, 46% to 42%.
