The Secret Service has confirmed that Republican candidate Donald Trump is “safe” following an incident at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday, when he was forced to leave the stage in a hurry after apparent gunshots were heard.
“The Secret Service has implemented protective measures and the former president is safe. This is now an active Secret Service investigation and more information will be released when it becomes available,” Anthony Guglielmi, chief of communications for the Secret Service, which is in charge of the security of presidents and former presidents in the United States, said on X.
Loud bangs were heard before Trump fell. Officers helped him up, blood streaming down his face. He was yelling at the crowd and raising his fist. He was then taken to a vehicle and evacuated from the scene.
Donald Trump’s spokesman Steven Cheung said the former president was “doing well.” “President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their swift action during this heinous act. He is doing well and is being examined at a local medical facility.”
