Former US President Donald Trump said on the 25th (local time) that it was a “shameful sight” to see pro-Palestinian protesters burning the American flag, and claimed that “Kim Jong-un (Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea) views us as a bunch of babies.”
Former President Trump said in a telephone interview with Fox News on the same day, “If you desecrate the American flag, you should be sentenced to at least a year in prison.” Thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters staged a violent protest on the 24th in front of Union Station, burning the American flag that had been raised and hanging a Palestinian flag in protest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the Knesset.
Former President Trump said, “Vladimir Putin (Russian President) and Xi Jinping (Chinese President) and the whole world are watching,” and “Kim Jong-un sees us as children.” He continued, “They know that this won’t happen in their country,” and “The world doesn’t look at the United States well.” Former President Trump did not mention the basis for saying that Chairman Kim sees the United States as a child. Former President Trump met with Chairman Kim three times in 2018 and 2019 and exchanged 58 personal letters.
Former President Trump’s criticism of pro-Palestinian protests and his mention of Chairman Kim and the leaders of China and Russia are interpreted as an assertion that the Biden administration’s response is underestimating the United States. In his acceptance speech for the Republican presidential nomination on the 18th, former President Trump said, “When I return (to the White House), I will get along well with him (Chairman Kim),” adding, “I think he will want me back and miss me.”
However, some in the Democratic Party are criticizing that “former President Trump is glorifying a dictator.” Former President Trump stirred controversy by saying, “When Kim Jong-un speaks, people sit up and pay attention,” and “I hope the American people do the same,” right after the North Korea-US summit in Singapore in 2018.
Meanwhile, former President Trump said on the same day, “Israel must end the war quickly,” and “the war is too long and too much.” He emphasized that the Israeli war must end early ahead of his meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu on the 26th. In his speech to the National Assembly, Prime Minister Netanyahu claimed that “the elimination of Hamas’ military capabilities and rule in the Gaza Strip is a complete victory, and there will be no compromise below that.”
Former President Trump also called President Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race and Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential candidacy a “coup d’etat.” When asked if he thought President Biden should resign from the presidency, Trump said, “Harris should take over, and she’s worse than Biden.”
