(CNN) Jim Trusty, the lawyer representing former President Donald Trump in his defamation lawsuit against CNN, said Friday he was withdrawing from the case, in the latest sign of the rift the former president’s legal team has been going through since Trusty and Another Trump lawyer has stopped representing the former president in the federal investigation of the classified documents.
“Mr. Trusty’s withdrawal from the case is based on irreconcilable differences between the attorney and the plaintiff, and the attorney can no longer effectively and adequately represent the plaintiff,” Trusty said in court documents seeking the court’s permission. to retire.
Trusty, along with attorney John Rowley, previously announced they would not represent Trump in criminal charges brought against the former president by special counsel Jack Smith related to confidential documents he withheld after his departure from the White House and his alleged obstruction of the federal investigation into the handling of those materials.

That announcement was made last Friday, after Trump was briefed on the impeachment. The former president pleaded not guilty to all charges on Tuesday.
The lawsuit against CNN—seeking $475 million in damages—accuses the network of a “dissuasion campaign in the form of slander and libel” that “has intensified in recent months.”
CNN asked the judge to have the case “dismissed with prejudice.”
Trusty’s withdrawal does not end the defamation case, and Trump is still represented by legal counsel in Florida in that civil case.
