Donald Trump must pay $5 million to E. Jean Carroll, a writer and former magazine columnist, after a federal appeals court confirmed that she is liable for sexual assault and defamation.

The decision confirms the verdict issued in May 2023 by a New York jury.

That verdict stated that Carroll should be awarded $2.02 million for sexual assault and $2.98 million for defamation. At that trial, nine members heard evidence and testimony related to Carroll’s accusation.

The writer claimed that, in the mid-1990s, Trump sexually abused her in a store fitting room and defamed her after she revealed what happened. However, the Republican magnate refused to accept the accusations. For this reason, he appealed the decision, even though he was saved from the jury considering the incident as rape.

It is worth mentioning that the legal controversy is not limited to this sentence. In another civil trial, Trump was sentenced to pay $83.3 million for defaming Carroll in 2019 by denying the facts. This case is also in the appeal process.
