Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is considering cutting back on the amount of intelligence Washington provides to NATO allies if he wins the election.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, reports the newspaper Politico with reference to sources.

As the publication notes, the countries to which the data is now being provided “depend on the United States for the information that has helped Ukraine confront Russia.” The article emphasizes that “reducing the volume of intelligence data could have serious security implications, especially for Ukraine.”

Trump’s advisers told NATO allies that restricting data transfers “would be part of a broader plan to reduce Washington’s support and cooperation” with the alliance, the paper’s sources said. The paper quoted a US official as saying that by receiving less data from the US, European allies would be more vulnerable to a hypothetical attack from Russia.

According to the newspaper, the US has been passing “vital information about Russia’s movements in Ukraine, including its military maneuvers and tactical movements” to NATO allies in recent years.

Politico reported on July 2 that Trump is considering the possibility of promising to abandon NATO’s eastward expansion if he wins the US presidential election in November, as well as to deprive some countries of the North Atlantic Alliance of security guarantees from Washington. As the publication emphasized, according to two security experts familiar with the mood of the Republican’s entourage, Trump “is considering the possibility of making a deal with [президентом России Владимиром] Putin on which countries could join NATO, in particular Ukraine and Georgia.” The publication noted that this would mean “a rejection of NATO’s vague promise of future membership for Ukraine.”
