“If you graduate from college, I think you should automatically get, as part of your diploma, a green card (permanent residency) so you can stay in this country,” former president and now Republican candidate Donald Trump said in a recent interview.

The statements were released on Thursday as part of the podcast “All In,” in which he gave some details of what his immigration plan could be if he reaches the White House again.

The former president indicated that these plans also include community colleges. “Anyone who graduates from a university,” he said.

In addition, mentioning that graduates “go there for two or four years,” he extended the initiative to various types of university enrollment and university programs.

For the international media, this is a significant change in his immigration stance, a consideration with solid basis since the Republican candidate has been exceptionally tough on immigration issues on other occasions.

In fact, during his administration he maintained a tough policy against migration and is one of the main detractors of the policies of current President Joe Biden.

Unlike what both of them said in the presidential debates of the previous elections, this time the immigration issue is one of the most important on the agenda, so much so that Trump has promised on more than one occasion to address this issue from the first day of his mandate if he is re-elected.

Trump has previously blamed undocumented immigrants for many of the nation’s ills, although he has acknowledged the impact of others who have put down roots in the United States, creating businesses and wealth and contributing to the country.

For many analysts, Trump’s statements contrast with previous speeches, in which he has promised to carry out the largest deportation operation in the history of the United States. It should be noted, however, that the former president’s words are aimed at a migrant sector that arrives in the United States mainly through scholarships and exchange programs, or those who have arrived and continued their studies in the nation.
