The Yomiuri Shimbun reported on the 22nd that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump mentioned the security environment surrounding China and Taiwan when he met Akie Abe, wife of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, last week.
On the 15th, President-elect Trump and his wife, Melania, had dinner with Akie at his home at the Mar-a-Lago Resort in Florida, USA, and reportedly talked about memories of former Prime Minister Abe and the world situation, including Taiwan.
Officials reported that President-elect Trump pointed out that China and Taiwan were a big problem, keeping in mind the similar situation in Taiwan. For this reason, there is speculation that the second Trump administration will attach importance to the Taiwan issue. As Japan is also very wary of the situation in Taiwan, attention is focused on whether there will be a shared understanding of the situation in Taiwan between the United States and Japan after President-elect Trump takes office.
It is known that President-elect Trump also showed enthusiasm for ceasefire negotiations between Russia and Ukraine at the dinner with First Lady Akie. President-elect Trump explained to Ms. Akie that he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris earlier this month and asked him to end the war.
The Japanese government is adjusting President-elect Trump’s schedule to meet with Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba before he is officially inaugurated as president on January 20.
